Kate’s favourite street in London – Charlotte Street

Charlotte Street London

The Charlotte Street hotel is a great option for drinks

Here’s one for you – what’s your favourite street in London? Perhaps a strange question but I definitely have one – Charlotte Street.

Not too far from Oxford Street but very far away in terms of leaving the hustle and bustle of shoppers behind, Charlotte Street has bars and restaurants aplenty, so much so you could probably spend the day here.

It’s apt that one of my best friends is called Charlotte and alongside my friend Toni we have spent many a Saturday doing just that and sampling the food and drink on offer. Here are a few favourites:

Herman ze German

In three words “excellent hot dog” (or should I say wurst). One of three outlets of it’s kind in London, Herman ze German provides brilliant wursts and schnitzel (I’m a big fan of the curry wurst) at the top end of Charlotte Street. It’s not a place you’re going to stay in for long, it’s more order at the counter, but it makes for the perfect lunch spot for a quick and reasonable (and very delicious) bite to eat.

Bubbledogs

If you’re thinking hot dogs but you’re after a posher affair then Bubbledogs is not too far along the road from Herman ze German and provides (as you might have guessed) bubbles and hot dogs. Theres lots of different takes on the hot dog though (no plain old hot dog here), so be adventurous and try the Jose or Mac Daddy.

ROKA

If you really want to treat yourself and splash the cash then head to ROKA. This award winning Japanese restaurant is anything but ordinary. Try out the tasting menu to sample a selection of the delights on offer from sushi and sashimi through to robatayaki cuisine. It’s £88 for the tasting menu so probably one for a special occasion.

Charlotte Street Hotel

The Charlotte Street Hotel is a pretty one and is definitely a perfect stop for a drink. If weather permits try and bag a table outside and people watch to your heart’s content or alternatively head inside to Oscar’s bar and restaurant. The interior of this hotel alone is enough to make you want to explore, and alongside brilliant cocktails this makes for the perfect place to while away a few hours.

Bourne and Hollingsworth’s bar

As part of the creative lifestyle brand Bourne & Hollingsworth you can expect good things.  Originally modelled on something resembling a great aunt’s front room, the Bourne & Hollingsworth bar at the end of Charlotte Street has been revamped with new interiors and is certainly worth a visit with some pretty different cocktails on offer too. (For the eagle eyed out there I know this is technically Rathbone Place but in my eyes I’d group it with Charlotte Street!).

Vagabond

After a good glass of wine and never sure which one to pick? Or just want to try a bit of everything? Vagabond is the place for you. You get a card (£5 deposit and you can credit it with how much you’d like to spend), and then you can pour your own wine from the wine tasting machines. You can opt for a sample, a glass, or a bigger glass pour. A fun concept for wine tasting with a difference!

So there’s just a few favourites on what could be a never ending list!

The Guestbook Comment: “Charlotte Street is the perfect place for lunch, drinks or dinner (or all of these!), as well as just being a great place to head to when you need a haven from the madness of Oxford Street.”
